Target Information

Glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) facilitates the reduction of hydroperoxides in a manner reliant on glutathione, thereby maintaining cellular redox balance. It is capable of reducing small soluble hydroperoxides like H2O2, cumene hydroperoxide, and tert-butyl hydroperoxide, along with several fatty acid-derived hydroperoxides. In mice, GPx1's function is closely associated with its antioxidant properties and its role in defending against oxidative stress. In the mouse brain, the absence of GPx1 results in an increased area of cerebral infarction and heightened apoptosis following ischemia/reperfusion injury. GPx1 knockout mice exhibit greater sensitivity to oxidative stress inducers, such as carbon tetrachloride and hydroperoxide, highlighting the crucial role of GPx1 in managing oxidative stress responses.
