Target Information
The mouse alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH-A2) encoded by the ADH1 gene is recognized as a class I alcohol dehydrogenase that facilitates the oxidation of retinol to retinal, marking the initial enzymatic step in converting retinol to its active metabolite, retinoic acid. In mice, the primary function of alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1) is to contribute to vitamin A metabolism, particularly in converting retinol to retinoic acid. While the expression of the ADH1 gene is influenced by the retinoic acid response element (RRE), unlike humans, the mouse ADH1 gene does not have direct regulation via the RRE. Additionally, the significance of ADH1 in retinoic acid signaling could be linked to the localized synthesis of vitamin A, indicating that it might play a developmental role through its impact on the retinoic acid signaling pathway.
