Target Information
Protein kinase C zeta type is a serine/threonine-protein kinase that operates independently of calcium and diacylglycerol. It plays a role in the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway and the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascade, contributing to NF-kappa-B activation, mitogenic signaling, cell proliferation, cell polarity, inflammatory responses, and the maintenance of long-term potentiation (LTP). In macrophages treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or in response to mitogenic stimuli, it acts downstream of PI3K to activate the MAP2K1/MEK1-MAPK1/ERK2 signaling cascade independent of RAF1 activation. It is necessary for insulin-dependent activation of AKT3 and may function more as an adapter than a direct activator. In mice, it is encoded by the Prkcz gene.
