Target Information
Hepatitis A virus cellular receptor 1 homolog, also known as Kidney Injury Molecule 1 (KIM-1), is a phosphatidylserine receptor that plays a crucial role in maintaining regulatory B-cell homeostasis, including their generation, expansion, and suppressor functions. As a P-selectin/SELPLG ligand, KIM-1 specifically facilitates the trafficking of activated, but not naive, T-cells during inflammatory responses. In mice, KIM-1 is primarily involved in kidney protection and repair mechanisms, particularly in cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is an epithelial cell adhesion molecule that becomes significantly upregulated following renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Given its dual role in AKI and CKD, KIM-1 is considered a potential therapeutic target. For instance, inhibiting its long-term expression or modulating its signaling pathways could help mitigate chronic renal fibrosis and enhance renal function.
