Target Information

Advanced Oxidation Protein Products (AOPPs) primarily contribute to lipid accumulation and the progression of atherosclerosis in mice. They achieve this by inhibiting cholesterol efflux in macrophages, mediated through the downregulation of the ABCA1 and ABCG1 genes. This inhibition results in lipid deposition within the arterial endothelium and liver, thereby aggravating atherosclerotic lesions. The decreased expression of ABCA1 and ABCG1 genes due to AOPPs leads to elevated cholesterol levels in the blood, including increased total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG). These alterations further facilitate lipid accumulation in the arterial endothelium and liver, promoting the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. Moreover, mice treated with AOPPs showed a significant increase in the fibrous cap area of the arterial intima and a decrease in the necrotic core area within the inner nuclear region, indicating structural changes in the atherosclerotic plaques.
