Target Information
As the earliest vertebrate group to possess a full set of insulin/IGF family ligands and receptors, fish utilize insulin (INS) to regulate key biological processes. These include feeding behavior, growth and development, and intermediary metabolism. The insulin receptor (IR), a receptor tyrosine kinase, mediates the effects of INS. Insulin maintains energy balance in fish primarily by regulating fatty acid and glucose metabolism. For example, in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), insulin is able to regulate fatty acid metabolism by affecting fatty acid sensors (e.g., Brockmann's bodies in the liver, pancreas, and intestine).
