Target Information
Mannose Associated Serine Protease 1 (MASP1) is integral to the lectin pathway of the complement system, which is vital for innate immunity. It works by recognizing and neutralizing pathogens through patterns of sugar moieties. The lectin pathway is activated when mannan-binding lectin (MBL) and ficolins bind to sugar moieties, subsequently triggering the activation of the associated proteases, MASP1 and MASP2. In mice, MASP1 is primarily involved in the complement system, particularly in activating the lectin pathway. In a mouse model of severe pertussis infection, MASP1 expression was significantly upregulated, and its inhibition helped alleviate infection symptoms. In a mouse model of a Lupus-like disease (MRL/lpr mice), the absence of MASP1 led to a significant reduction in lectin pathway activity, indicating that MASP1 is crucial in regulating autoimmune responses.
