Catalase, a widespread enzyme present in various oxygen-exposed organisms (including bacteria, plants, and animals), plays a vital role in decomposing hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Catalase has been extensively studied in mammals and its main function is to protect cells from hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative damage. This function may also be present in fish. Its significance lies in safeguarding cells from oxidative harm caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Notably, catalase serves as a biomarker for antioxidant and biotransformation systems, commonly utilized to assess polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in fish.
