Target Information

Maternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase (MELK) is a serine/threonine-protein kinase involved in various processes, including cell cycle regulation, stem cell self-renewal, apoptosis, and splicing regulation. MELK has broad substrate specificity, phosphorylating a range of proteins such as BCL2L14, CDC25B, MAP3K5/ASK1, and ZNF622. It promotes apoptosis by phosphorylating and activating MAP3K5/ASK1. In mice, MELK plays diverse roles across multiple biological processes, from embryonic development to cancer. Its involvement in cell cycle regulation, neural progenitor cell proliferation, tumorigenesis, and immune regulation makes it a significant target for research.
