Target Information

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), previously referred to as ligandins, constitute a versatile family of metabolic isoenzymes found in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. Their primary function lies in facilitating the conjugation of the reduced form of glutathione (GSH) to xenobiotic substrates, aiding in detoxification processes. By attaching GSH via a sulfhydryl group to electrophilic centers on diverse substrates, GSTs enhance water solubility and contribute to the breakdown of these compounds. Interestingly, GSTs were initially termed ligandins due to their ability to bind toxins and serve as transport proteins. The molecular weight of GST purified from chicken erythrocytes was estimated to be 47,500 Da by gel filtration.
