Jagged 1 Protein acts as a ligand for several Notch receptors and plays a crucial role in mediating Notch signaling pathways. In mice, Jagged-1 functions are extensive, impacting areas from neurodegenerative diseases to immune regulation, angiogenesis, and the maintenance of hematopoietic stem cells. In mouse models, Jagged-1 expression in astrocytes is significantly linked to the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Research indicates that Jagged-1 exerts a protective influence in ALS via the Notch signaling pathway. When Jagged-1 is selectively deleted in mouse astrocytes, it results in worsened disease progression, highlighting its important role in moderating pathological Notch signals.
