Bovine ghrelin, which is also known as appetite regulating hormone or motilin related peptide, is a hormone that is primarily produced by enteroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach. It is often called a "hunger hormone" because it increases the drive to eat. In addition to its metabolic role, it is now considered a basic regulator of reproductive functions of mammals, acting at central and gonadal levels. Ghrelin exerts a specific and direct role on the oocyte, accelerating its maturational process.
