Bifidobacterium is a genus of Gram-positive, nonmotile, often branched anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria are found in various ecological niches, although most were initially isolated from animals, particularly mammals, during the milk-feeding stage of life. Some species within this genus have the potential to be used as probiotics.
