Target Information

Sialic acids are a class of alpha-keto acid sugars with a nine-carbon backbone. Sialic acids are found widely distributed in animal tissues. They commonly decorate the end of sugar chains on glycoproteins, glycolipids, or gangliosides at the surface of cells or soluble proteins. Total sialic acid may be useful in detecting inflammatory conditions and could be included in biochemical profiles used to monitor the general condition of pigs as a moderate acute phase marker.
