Target Information
Rabbit Aquaporin-1 (AQP1) is a membrane channel protein that facilitates rapid water movement across cell membranes driven by osmotic gradients. It is abundant in red blood cells, endothelial cells, and various tissues, including the kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, and lungs. In the kidneys, AQP1 is crucial for water reabsorption in the proximal tubules and descending thin limbs of Henle. It also plays a significant role in maintaining fluid balance in the corneal endothelium, contributing to corneal transparency. Additionally, AQP1 is involved in vascular function, promoting nitric oxide (NO) and CO2 transport, and regulating vascular dilation and contraction. It is essential for osmotic protection and water reabsorption during osmotic stress, such as intense exercise. AQP1's expression in neonatal rabbits is lower than in adults, which may affect water permeability in renal tissues. Overall, AQP1 is vital for maintaining water homeostasis and supporting various physiological functions in rabbits.
