Target Information
Mouse Growth/Differentiation Factor 11 (Gdf11) is a member of the TGF-β superfamily, playing a critical role in embryonic development and tissue homeostasis. In mouse embryos, Gdf11 is predominantly expressed in the tail bud and is essential for anterior-posterior axis specification, influencing the positional identity of the skeleton. Gdf11-null mice exhibit severe skeletal abnormalities, including transformations in the vertebrae and rib structures. Additionally, Gdf11 is involved in craniofacial development, with null mice showing a high incidence of cleft palate. Beyond embryonic development, Gdf11 has been implicated in the regulation of muscle regeneration, erythropoiesis, and metabolic processes. In aging studies, Gdf11 has been reported to have both positive and negative effects on muscle function and cardiovascular health, with some studies suggesting its potential as an anti-aging factor.
