Target Information
Mouse Osteocalcin (Bglap) is a non-collagenous protein synthesized and secreted by osteoblasts. It is γ-carboxylated at specific residues, which increases its affinity for bone matrix components. In mouse models, Bglap has been shown to play a role in bone remodeling and energy metabolism. Bglap-deficient mice exhibit increased bone size, density, and strength, as well as elevated adiposity and impaired glucose tolerance. Bglap has also been implicated in the regulation of insulin secretion, glucose metabolism, and muscle mass. Additionally, Bglap is involved in the adaptation to exercise, where it supports glucose and fatty acid utilization in muscles. Its levels increase during exercise and decline with aging, correlating with reduced exercise capacity and muscle mass. Bglap's role as an endocrine factor connecting bone to other tissues highlights its importance in metabolic regulation and potential therapeutic applications.
