Target Information
Pulmonary surfactant-associated protein D plays a vital role in the lung's defense against inhaled microorganisms, organic antigens, and toxins. It interacts with substances such as bacterial lipopolysaccharides, oligosaccharides, and fatty acids, and modulates leukocyte action during immune responses. It may also be involved in the extracellular reorganization or turnover of pulmonary surfactant. It strongly binds to maltose residues and, to a lesser extent, other alpha-glucosyl moieties. In mice, surfactant-associated protein D (SP-D) primarily functions by binding to pathogens, regulating immune responses, and maintaining alveolar stability. SP-D is crucial for lung immune defense, effectively binding to various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, to promote their clearance. Additionally, SP-D enhances the phagocytic capacity of phagocytes, such as alveolar macrophages, thereby improving pathogen clearance efficiency in the lungs.
