Target Information
Reticulocalbin-2 (RCN2) in mice is primarily associated with the development of atherosclerosis. RCN2 is highly expressed in the blood vessel wall, particularly in endothelial cells and the adventitia. Research has shown that B6 mice, a commonly used experimental strain, exhibit higher levels of RCN2 transcripts in the aorta, whereas isogenic mice carrying the C3H chromosome 9 region (which includes the RCN2 gene) display lower RCN2 expression. When fed a high-fat diet for two weeks, B6-Apoε−/− mice, a model for studying atherosclerosis, developed fatty plaques in lesion-prone areas of the aorta, while C3H-Apoε−/− mice did not show similar plaque formation. These findings suggest that RCN2 may serve as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for atherosclerosis.
