Target Information
Pulmonary surfactant-associated proteins enhance alveolar stability by reducing surface tension at the air-liquid interface within peripheral air spaces. SP-C is a highly hydrophobic protein secreted by alveolar type II epithelial cells and plays a crucial role in pulmonary surfactant. It maintains the stability of alveolar surfactant by binding to phospholipids, thus preventing alveolar collapse and lowering energy expenditure during breathing. Mice deficient in SP-C exhibit unstable alveolar surfactant and decreased lung compliance, potentially leading to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Dysfunction of SP-C is associated with a variety of lung diseases.
