Target Information

Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is a multifunctional enzyme responsible for the de novo synthesis of long-chain saturated fatty acids, using acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA as substrates in the presence of NADPH. This enzyme possesses seven catalytic activities and includes a site for binding the prosthetic group 4'-phosphopantetheine within the acyl carrier protein (ACP) domain. In mice, FAS plays roles in fatty acid synthesis, energy metabolism, liver lipid homeostasis, and is linked to obesity and metabolic diseases. As a key enzyme, FAS catalyzes the formation of palmitic acid (16:0) from acetyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA through multiple reaction steps, which are vital for constructing cell membranes, energy storage, and hormone signaling. Additionally, FAS is involved in regulating the insulin signaling pathway, thereby influencing glucose and lipid metabolism.
