Target Information
The C-terminal propeptide of Type III collagen (PIIIINP) is a crucial part of the precursor molecules of Type III collagen. It plays a key role in guiding the assembly of collagen molecular chains, stabilizing α chains, and facilitating the formation of triple helical structures. During pathological conditions, such as chronic brain trauma or cerebral hemorrhage, there is a notable increase in the level of PIIINP in mice, indicating enhanced collagen synthesis. Besides its involvement in collagen biosynthesis, PIIINP may also contribute to cell signaling by interacting with cell surface receptors and other elements of the extracellular matrix. For instance, research has demonstrated that bone morphogenetic protein-1 (BMP-1) can cleave PIIINP, thereby promoting its degradation and initiating collagen fiber formation.
