Target Information
Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), or B-type natriuretic peptide, is a hormone released by cardiomyocytes in the heart's ventricles in response to the stretching that occurs with increased blood volume. BNP has important physiologic functions in humans and other mammals, especially in the diagnosis and prognostic assessment in cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure. Both ANP and BNP play roles in safeguarding the cardiovascular system from volume overload through their actions. Research indicates that serum BNP provides greater diagnostic value than serum ANP in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease.
