Target Information

Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a sodium-dependent, high-affinity transporter responsible for the uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate. It operates as a symporter, simultaneously transporting one amino acid molecule along with two or three Na+ ions and one proton, while one K+ ion is counter-transported. It also mediates Cl- flux independently of amino acid transport to prevent the accumulation of negative charges caused by aspartate and Na+ symport. EAAT2 is a high-affinity, sodium-dependent glutamate transporter mainly expressed in astrocytes. It is essential for the reuptake of postsynaptically released glutamate and aspartate from the extracellular space into the cell, thereby preventing the extracellular accumulation of these excitatory neurotransmitters, which could lead to neurotoxicity. In mice, EAAT2 expression is closely linked with genes associated with neural excitability, indicating its significant role in regulating the nervous system's excitability.
