Target Information

Twist-related protein 1 functions as a transcriptional regulator. It inhibits myogenesis by sequestering E proteins, blocking trans-activation by MEF2, and preventing MYOD1 from binding DNA through direct interaction, likely involving the basic domains of both proteins. In mice, Twist1 is widely expressed during early embryonic development, particularly in structures like the anterior mesoderm, primitive streaks, and neural crest-derived head mesoderm. It plays a crucial role in mesoderm formation and differentiation by regulating signaling pathways such as FGF, BMP, and TGFβ, thereby influencing the development of various mesoderm-derived tissues. Additionally, Twist1 is involved in the formation of heart valves and atrioventricular tubes.
