Mesothelin, in its membrane-anchored form, may play a role in cellular adhesion, while megakaryocyte-potentiating factor (MPF) can enhance megakaryocyte colony formation. Although the function of mesothelin in mice is not fully understood, it has been extensively studied and recognized for its potential role in the tumor microenvironment and as a target for cancer therapy. Mesothelin knockout mice do not exhibit significant developmental, growth, or reproductive defects, as they show no abnormalities in growth, reproduction, or blood cell counts. While mesothelin is not essential for mice, it may have an important role in the tumor microenvironment. For instance, mesothelin knockout mice demonstrate significantly reduced tumor cell growth in the peritoneal cavity, suggesting that mesothelin might promote cancer growth and metastasis by influencing the tumor microenvironment.
