Target Information

In mice, mannose-binding lectin (MBL) primarily functions as a crucial component of the innate immune system by recognizing and eliminating pathogens through various mechanisms. MBL is a C-type lectin that binds to mannose and other sugar structures on the surfaces of microorganisms via its carbohydrate recognition domain, facilitating the identification of pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Research in mouse models has demonstrated that MBL is significant in the onset and progression of certain diseases. For instance, in acute inflammatory diseases caused by arboviruses, such as Rift Valley fever virus and dengue virus, MBL expression increases notably. Mice lacking MBL exhibit milder symptoms and reduced tissue damage.
