Target Information
Irisin is a hormone-like molecule secreted by skeletal muscle following exercise, primarily observed in mice and humans. It plays a crucial role in various physiological and pathological processes, including energy metabolism, bone health, neuroprotection, and immune regulation. In mice, irisin enhances energy expenditure by promoting the browning of white adipose tissue, a metabolic process that converts fat into heat energy, aiding in weight reduction and improving glucose homeostasis. Additionally, irisin can notably increase bone mass and strength in mice. Research indicates that irisin promotes bone formation by activating osteoblasts, through pathways such as the αV β5 integrin-mediated BMP/SMAD signaling pathway, and inhibits osteoclast activity, thereby maintaining bone homeostasis.
