Target Information
ICAM proteins act as ligands for the leukocyte adhesion protein LFA-1 (integrin alpha-L/beta-2). During the trans-endothelial migration of leukocytes, ICAM1 promotes the formation of endothelial apical cups via the activation of ARHGEF26/SGEF and RHOG. In mice, the expression of ICAM-1 increases during skin contact hypersensitivity reactions and plays a role in the migration of dendritic cells through lymphatic vessels. Mice lacking ICAM-1 exhibit significant protection against renal ischemia-reperfusion injury, likely due to reduced inflammatory cell infiltration and less tissue damage. Furthermore, in a cerebral ischemia-reperfusion model, ICAM-1-deficient mice display lower cerebral infarct volumes and less neurological damage.
