Target Information
In mice, phosphorylated neurofilament H (NF-H) is involved in several functions, including neuronal axon transport, neurofilament assembly, and contributing to the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Phosphorylated NF-H is crucial for axonal transport, as studies suggest that phosphorylation of the NF-H tail may regulate axonal transport speed by influencing interactions between neurofilaments and other cytoskeletal components, like microtubules. For instance, CDC2 kinase can specifically phosphorylate the NF-H tail, altering its binding state with microtubules, which implies that NF-H phosphorylation may affect axonal transport by modifying its interaction with the cytoskeleton. However, in transgenic mouse models where the phosphorylation sites on the NF-H tail were deleted or mutated, researchers found these alterations did not significantly impact the rate of axonal transport or the formation of neurofilament bundles.
