Target Information

Heparanase is an endoglycosidase that cleaves heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) into heparan sulfate side chains and core proteoglycans, playing a crucial role in the degradation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM). It selectively targets the linkage between a glucuronic acid unit and an N-sulfo glucosamine unit with either a 3-O-sulfo or 6-O-sulfo group. In mice, heparanase is involved in various complex functions, including inflammation, tumor progression, wound healing, and diabetic nephropathy. It plays a dual role in diseases by promoting pathological processes and participating in normal physiological activities, such as wound healing. By degrading heparan sulfate, heparanase releases biomolecules involved in cell adhesion, like IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10, which enhance inflammatory responses through the TLR-4 signaling pathway.
