Target Information
Voltage-sensitive calcium channels (VSCCs) facilitate the entry of calcium ions into excitable cells and play a vital role in numerous calcium-dependent processes, such as muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell motility, cell division, and cell death. Mutations in the Cacna1f gene result in retinal dysfunction, marked by impaired formation of photoreceptor synapses, reduced retinal layer thickness, and abnormal distribution of retinal neurons. For instance, in the nob2 mouse model, complete loss of the Cacna1f gene causes disorganized outer retinal layers (OPL), diminished photoreceptor synapses, abnormal morphology of rod and bipolar cells, and irregular neuronal extensions in the outer nuclear layer.
