Target Information
The hematopoietic progenitor cell antigen CD34 may function as an adhesion molecule, playing a role in early hematopoiesis by facilitating the attachment of stem cells to the bone marrow's extracellular matrix or directly to stromal cells. It could provide a scaffold for the attachment of lineage-specific glycans, which allows stem cells to bind to lectins expressed by stromal cells or other bone marrow components, and it presents carbohydrate ligands to selectins. In mice, CD34 serves diverse functions across various biological processes, including hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, neural regeneration, tumorigenesis, and immune regulation. In mouse skin tumor models, CD34-positive hair follicle stem cells are considered potential initiators of tumorigenesis. Additionally, CD34-positive bone marrow-derived cells play a crucial role in immune regulation, where injecting CD34-positive bone marrow cells into immunodeficient mice can restore lymphohematopoietic system function.
