Target Information
In mice, Calprotectin (S100A8/S100A9) serves various functions, including immune regulation, inflammatory response, antibacterial activity, and effects on multiple diseases. As an endogenous danger signal (DAMP), Calprotectin activates Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), thereby amplifying the inflammatory response. Without Calprotectin, mice exhibit a reduced protective response against endotoxin (LPS)-induced sepsis, highlighting its critical role in inflammation. Calprotectin, primarily an antimicrobial protein in neutrophils, inhibits bacterial growth by binding to zinc. In models of Candida albicans infection, the absence of Calprotectin results in diminished infection clearance ability, underscoring its significance in antifungal immunity. Additionally, Calprotectin is vital for immune regulation, promoting the differentiation and function of regulatory T cells (Tregs) to maintain immune tolerance. It also plays a crucial role in the inflammatory response by activating natural killer (NK) cells and enhancing IFN-γ expression.
