Target Information

Osteocalcin, also referred to as bone gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing protein (BGLAP), is a small non-collagenous protein hormone present in bone and dentin, initially identified as a calcium-binding protein. Osteocalcin binds to calcium and hydroxyapatite, contributing to bone mineralization and structural integrity. Emerging evidence suggests that osteocalcin may also have endocrine functions, influencing glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Osteocalcin has been shown to effect male reproductive function. Past research has shown that osteocalcin concentrations are higher in fetal guinea pigs compared to adults.
