Target Information
Growth/differentiation factor 8, also known as myostatin, functions specifically as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. As a protein secreted by the TGF-β (transforming growth factor-β) family, its primary role is to limit skeletal muscle mass. In mice, the absence or inhibition of myostatin results in a substantial increase in muscle mass due to muscle fiber proliferation and hypertrophy. Beyond muscle growth, myostatin also influences systemic metabolism and adipose tissue regulation. Myostatin-deficient mice exhibit lower body fat content and enhanced insulin sensitivity, highlighting its significant role in regulating fat metabolism and energy balance.
