Target Information
Immunoglobulin Y (IgY), abbreviated as IgY, serves as the primary antibody in the blood of birds, reptiles, and lungfish. Interestingly, it is also abundant in chicken egg yolk. Like other immunoglobulins, IgY is a class of proteins produced by the immune system in response to specific foreign substances, allowing it to recognize and target them. Structurally and functionally distinct from mammalian IgG, IgY plays a vital role in these non-mammalian species. It does not cross-react with antibodies raised against mammalian IgG. Notably, chickens, due to their frequent egg-laying ability, are increasingly used as a source for customized antibodies in research. Ducks, on the other hand, produce a truncated form of IgY that lacks part of the Fc region, rendering it unable to bind complement or be taken up by macrophages.
