Target Information
Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is an organic compound that belongs to the class of amine oxides. TMAO consists of a trimethylamine group (three methyl groups attached to a nitrogen atom) and an oxygen atom. TMAO is a product of the oxidation of trimethylamine, a common metabolite of choline in animals. It is a gut microbial-derived metabolite that has been suggested as a potential regulator of human health. Dogs with congestive heart failure secondary to degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) had higher concentrations of TMAO compared to both asymptomatic DMVD dogs and healthy controls.
