Creatine kinase (CK) is composed of three isoenzymes-CK-MM, CK-MB, and CK-BB-each predominantly found in specific tissues and detectable in both serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) is a myocardium-specific isoenzyme used primarily for the diagnosis and monitoring of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), as well as other cardiac diseases. Elevated CK-MB is strongly associated with the development of acute myocardial infarction and its sensitivity and specificity make it an important tool in the diagnosis of AMI. In addition, elevated CK-MB is also associated with certain non-cardiac diseases, such as chronic skeletal muscle disease and brain injury. In dogs, creatine kinase (CK) is primarily located in the skeletal muscles, myocardium, brain, and intestines.
