Target Information
3-Mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase facilitates the transfer of sulfur ions to cyanide or other thiol compounds and exhibits weak rhodanese activity. This enzyme plays a crucial role in detoxifying cyanide and is essential for thiosulfate biosynthesis. Additionally, it acts as an antioxidant. In conjunction with cysteine aminotransferase (CAT), it aids in the breakdown of cysteine and is a key producer of hydrogen sulfide in the brain, retina, and vascular endothelial cells. In mice, MPST functions are extensive and multifaceted, encompassing hydrogen sulfide production, involvement in metabolic diseases, inflammatory and immune responses, and protection of the nervous system. For mice on a high-fat diet, upregulated MPST expression can lead to elevated hydrogen sulfide levels, which in turn can exacerbate the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
