Target Information

Thyroglobulin (TG) is the precursor protein that serves as the substrate for thyroid hormone synthesis. When needed, thyroglobulin's tyrosine residues are combined with iodine, and the protein is subsequently cleaved to release T4 and T3. The protein is secreted by thyrocytes into the lumen of the thyroid follicle where, following iodination by thyroid peroxidase, TG acts as a scaffold protein for thyroid hormone synthesis and as a storage protein for both thyroid hormone and iodide.
