Cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-3 binds to the cAMP response element (CRE), with the consensus sequence 5'-GTGACGT[AC][AG]-3', which is found in numerous viral and cellular promoters. ATF-3 functions as a transcriptional repressor at promoters containing ATF sites. In mice, ATF3 has a broad and intricate role, influencing various biological processes, including metabolism, neural function, immunity, tumor development, inflammation, and cell death. It is particularly important in maintaining metabolic homeostasis, especially in the pancreas and hypothalamus.
