Target Information
IgM immunoglobulins are generated by plasma cells as a component of the organism's adaptive humoral immune defense against an external pathogen. IgM is one of the earliest types of antibodies produced and is usually produced rapidly in the early stages of infection to fight pathogens. For example, in cattle infected with Trypanosoma longipinna, CD5+ B cells (also known as B-1 cells) increase significantly during infection and produce IgM antibodies primarily against non-antigen-specific antigens (e.g., trinitrophenol and single-stranded DNA). This suggests that IgM may have a rapid response function in the immune response of cattle, especially in the early stages of infection.
