Target Information
Phenylalanine-4-hydroxylase is an enzyme responsible for the hydroxylation of L-phenylalanine to L-tyrosine. In mice, its primary function involves metabolizing phenylalanine into tyrosine, a process that occurs mainly in the liver and kidneys and is crucial for the overall metabolism of phenylalanine. The activity of phenylalanine-4-hydroxylase is closely linked to metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU results from inadequate activity of this enzyme, leading to the accumulation of phenylalanine due to its improper conversion to tyrosine. Additionally, chronic immune stimulation can impair the enzyme's activity, thereby affecting tyrosine production.
