Target Information

Mouse Mucin 5, Subtype B, Tracheobronchial (Muc5b) is a major gel-forming mucin in the airways, essential for maintaining airway surface liquid and mucociliary clearance. It is expressed in goblet cells and submucosal glands of the tracheobronchial epithelium. Muc5b forms hydrated gel networks that trap inhaled particles and pathogens, facilitating their removal. In mouse models, Muc5b deficiency leads to mucus hypersecretion and airway obstruction, exacerbating conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Muc5b is also implicated in cystic fibrosis, where its overexpression correlates with mucus plugging and lung function decline. Recent studies highlight Muc5b's role in regulating airway inflammation and its potential as a therapeutic target in mucociliary clearance disorders. Additionally, Muc5b is being explored for its role in cancer and its potential in improving airway clearance in patients with respiratory diseases.
