Target Information
Mouse Collagen Alpha-1(I) Chain (Col1a1) is the most abundant protein in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of bone, skin, and tendon. It forms heterotrimeric type I procollagen with the alpha-2 subunit (Col1a2), which undergoes proteolytic processing during fibril formation. In mice, Col1a1 is crucial for the structural integrity of connective tissues. Mice lacking Col1a1 die in utero due to blood vessel rupture. Transgenic mice with reduced Col1a1 levels exhibit defects in mineralized and non-mineralized connective tissues and progressive hearing loss. Col1a1 is also involved in various diseases, including fibrosis and bone diseases such as osteogenesis imperfecta. It interacts with cell receptors like integrinβ, Endo180, and Discoidin Domain Receptors (DDRs), influencing processes like fibrillogenesis and ECM remodeling.
