Target Information
In rabbits, cystatin C is encoded by the CST3 gene and is primarily used as a biomarker for kidney function. This protein is present in almost all tissues and body fluids, acting as a strong inhibitor of lysosomal proteinases-enzymes within cell subunits responsible for protein degradation. Additionally, cystatin C is likely one of the most crucial extracellular inhibitors of cysteine proteases, preventing protein breakdown outside the cell by this specific type of protein-degrading enzyme. In rabbit studies, Cystatin C measurement can be used to assess changes in kidney function. For example, dynamic changes in kidney function can be monitored by comparing Cystatin C levels at different time points.
