Target Information
Rat neurocan (NCAN) is a 136-kDa chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan predominantly expressed in rat central nervous system (CNS) tissues-enriched in brain, spinal cord, and neural progenitor cells. It belongs to the lectican family, contributing to extracellular matrix (ECM) organization in the CNS by interacting with hyaluronan, other proteoglycans, and cell surface receptors. Key functions include regulating neural cell migration, axon guidance, and synaptic plasticity during rat development and adult CNS homeostasis. Dysregulated expression associates with neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegeneration, and CNS injury. As a critical mediator of CNS ECM structure and neural signaling, rat NCAN is a key target for studying neurobiology, developmental disorders, and neuroprotective therapeutics.
