Target Information

Rat cathepsin S (CTSS) is a 28-kDa cysteine protease predominantly expressed in rat immune cells (macrophages, dendritic cells, microglia) and epithelial tissues (lung, kidney, skin). It localizes to endosomes/lysosomes and is secreted extracellularly, catalyzing the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins (e.g., collagen, elastin) and regulating antigen processing/presentation. Beyond tissue remodeling, it modulates inflammatory signaling by cleaving cytokines and chemokines, orchestrating rat immune responses. Critical for physiological processes (wound healing, tissue homeostasis) and pathological cascades (inflammation, fibrosis, cancer), its dysregulation associates with autoimmune diseases and neurodegeneration. As a multifunctional protease in immunity and tissue biology, rat CTSS is a key target for studying inflammatory pathologies, immunology, and protease-targeted therapeutics.
