Target Information

Cytochrome b561 is an intriguing integral membrane protein responsible for electron transport. It binds two heme groups non-covalently. Cytochrome B561 is encoded by the CYB561 gene in pigs. CYB561 is canonically involved in the trans-membranous electron transfer from cytosolic ascorbate to the intravesicular ascorbyl radical in neuroendocrine secretory granules. The CYB561-catalyzed reaction involves a histidine cycle mechanism of coupled proton/electron transfer between ascorbate and the ascorbyl radical.
